Gucci at 90 : Still hitting the G spot
Gucci is 90 and, given that the luxury goods industry is rarely
backwards in coming forwards where the promotion of a big brand is
concerned, if you didn't know about its birthday already, you soon will.
Festivities have so far included a standout women's ready-to-wear
collection harking back to spirit of the label in the jet-setting
Seventies. That era was all about "Halston, Gucci, Fiorucci", of course,
as Sister Sledge and the entire guest list at Studio 54 understood only
too well. Then there is the recently unveiled Gucci Fiat 500 to
consider ¨C retailing at around $19,000 it's perhaps the ultimate
run-around, complete with signature green-red-green go-faster stripe.
This week, meanwhile, the Gucci 1921 collection arrives in store,
featuring a new trademark ¨C G Gucci 1921 ¨C and drawing on the name's
heritage for all its worth. Frida Giannini, Gucci's creative director
since 2005, says that "with this special commemorative collection I
wanted to pay homage to the icons, craftsmanship and luxury materials
for which the house has become renowned since its founding by Guccio
Gucci... Each item in the collection tells a story, representing a
chapter within the house's narrative history."
With this in mind, 1921's New Jackie and Horsebit Chain handbags

The past is another country as reports take us back in time
The country's economic reforms were just 3 years old, and the first
group of students admitted through the college entrance exam, which had
been reinstated in 1977, had graduated. The country was cautiously
opening its doors again to the world, and the world was curious to peek
inside. The Cold War, sanctions and distrust made China seem so
different, and misinterpretation was common. But some visitors saw
themselves as adventurous explorers in an alien environment. This is
evident in the foreign press coverage of China in 1981, some of which we
excerpt today.
The scope of general interest in China was limited to lifestyles,
customs and regulations, all of which were, quite literally,Put on white

Oakley has just finished its 12th consecutive quarter of double-digit
revenue growth, and now owns nearly a fifth of the $1.7 billion U.S.

As its influence continues to expand, the country no longer seems as
mysterious and incomprehensible as it did 30 years ago.True,
misunderstandings and rumors still abound. But the country's own voice,
from growing indigenous outlets such as China Daily, has grown stronger,
more confident and far-reaching.
China today, by all measures, is not the China of 1981. The country
has matured in its ability to communicate with the world around it. The
history of China Daily itself bears testament to this shift. The
selection of news coverage about China in 1981, in the paragraphs that
follow, is not intended to merely raise a laugh. Granted, many of the
items appear comical, if not bizarre, to today's young readers. But
without this historic context it is impossible to understand how far
China has come. History, as we all shall learn, should be respected, for
people cannot make their history under conditions of their own
choosing.
It is in this spirit that China Daily, on the eve of its 30th
anniversary, brings to readers the faces of a different China, when some
of the country's best reporters and editors were called upon to create
this newspaper.Libyan state television showed Gadhafi, dressed all in

unsure of how the game is played.May history enlighten our work today
and tomorrow, as the paper goes on to discover China's daily
transformation in this changing world.National pride has been growing'

Grab your guitar and join in for Tuesday's citywide Make Music Chicago fest
The original plan was simply to throw a musical block party. But the
idea quickly grew into something much bigger and far more ambitious ¨C a
daylong, anything-goes Chicago festival featuring live music of every
variety, presented in public spaces and neighborhoods throughout the
city.
The result is a moveable musical feast called Make Music Chicago,
and the best part about it is that anybody who can tootle a flute or
croon a show tune can participate ¨C or simply take it all in from the
sidelines.

Clemons' death leaves void for Springsteen
The death of saxophone player Clarence Clemons ripped a hole in
Bruce Springsteen's music and onstage life, taking away a figure who had
served him loyally for decades and never failed to add joy to the E
Street Band's epic performances. It's not the first loss for the rock
world's best-known and most accomplished backup band. The Video Door Phones
proceedings Tuesday in Abu Dhabi's Federal Supreme Court comes after
international watchdog groups, including human rights groups, criticized
the arrests.Court officials say five activists have gone on trial on
security-related charges. Keyboard player Danny Federici died in 2008 of
melanoma. Steve Van Zandt, Springsteen's youthful friend and closest
partner, left for several years in the 1980s and was replaced on guitar
by Nils Lofgren. When Van Zandt returned, Lofgren stayed.
Yet Clemons' loss cuts deeply into the soul of the band. His
importance was acknowledged whenever Springsteen performed "Tenth Avenue
Freeze-out," when he sang, "We made that change uptown and the Big Man
joined the band," inevitably followed by a wail of Clemons' sax and a
roar from the crowd. The two men met in 1971 on the New Jersey bar band
circuit, and when Springsteen released his debut album two years

Inevitably Clemons' introduction was the climax every night when
Springsteen presented the individual band members to the audience,
accompanied by a variety of regal nicknames like "Master of the
Universe" and "King of the World."A makeshift memorial of flowers,
candles and photos grew outside of the Stone Pony nightclub in Asbury
Park, N.J., home turf where Clemons and Springsteen made frequent stage
appearances through the years.

role of Clemons in the act. The two men were a marked physical contrast:

A Long Path to a Belated Introduction
When Janet Brosious was 12, she and her sister were given Brownie
